I am walking 25km for sick and injured kids.

Support my 25km walk for Archie

On Sunday 24 March, we (with the kids on our backs) are walking 25km to raise money for the amazing charity that supported us whilst Archie was in a critical condition with Strep A Septic Shock.

In August 2023, Archie had a cough and a rash so we took him to the doctor who sent us to Canberra hospital as a precaution. The hospital reassured us that it was just a common cold and treat with Panadol. The next day, his breathing changed so we took him straight back to emergency. Archie had developed severe pneumonia and was going into septic shock with multi organ failure. They quickly arranged a helicopter to transfer Archie to Sydney Children’s Hospital and Sam and I had to drive, not knowing if we would ever see our son alive again. I was also 29 weeks pregnant at this point.

The last thing we were thinking about was where we were going to stay and for how long. We were lucky to have been provided with a room at Ronald McDonald in Randwick which was a short 5 minute walk from Archie’s bedside.

As we had no family or support in Sydney, staying at Ronald McDonald allowed us to focus on supporting Archie and his lengthy recovery without worrying about our own accommodation, foodand parking.

Archie spent 3 weeks in ICU and 2.5 months on the ward while he went through rehabilitation. He had to relearn how to do everything - eat, drink, talk, walk.

On the 17 November, Archie was discharged on the same day his baby brother Luka was born next door at The Royal and we could finally go home.

On average, it costs $160 per night to support a sick child and their family. We stayed over 100 nights. Please support my 25km walk to keep other families together as they face the most difficult journey of their lives.

Thank you,

Sarah, Sam, Archie and Luka

Hey Sarah, good luck with the walk and I trust all is well now with your little ones. Many years ago I got to attend a Shave for a Cure event where we heard from a family who had likewise been supported by RMDH while their child had to have treatment for leukaemia. Such a vital service.
